“I saw it online, so it must be true.”

In an age where information is only ever a click away and students are growing up in a digital environment, it’s more important than ever that young people can tell the good sources from the bad.

Our first Big Ideas for Young Minds event for secondary students unpacks misinformation – how it’s constructed, disseminated and, ultimately, believed.

What’s in store?

Join in-person from 10am – 2pm

Enjoy a range of thought-provoking workshops and a tour of the Library, including the Make Believe: Explorations in Misinformation exhibition.

Join online with one (or all!) of the livestreamed workshops

  • Political Cartoons with Megan Herbert, 10.20am–11.10am: Learn the art of political cartoons with Megan Herbert and see how satire can highlight truths.
  • Navigating Social Media with Sushi Das, 11.20am–12.10pm: Build your critical thinking skills when navigating social media with Sushi Das. Explore different types of online content, why it’s spread and how to avoid being fooled.
  • Dissecting the News with Sami Shah, 1.00pm–1.50pm: Dissect the news with comedian Sami Shah and learn how to decide for yourself what news you can trust.

Who will you hear from?

  • Sami Shah, Pakistani-Australian comedian, critically-acclaimed author and broadcaster, lecturer at the University of Melbourne, and curator of OzAsia Festival’s Weekend of Words.
  • Sushi Das, award-winning British-Australian journalist, recognised with two Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards, author and current Lecturer at RMIT University.
  • Megan Herbert, award-winning cartoonist, writer, broadcaster and event illustrator, recipient of the Museum of Australian Democracy’s Political Cartoonist of the Year Award and editorial cartoonist for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

Book your tickets now.

Please note: In the Make Believe exhibition, there is an opt in space focused on medical misinformation about the clitoris. In this room it includes anatomical textbooks from the Library's collection that feature highly detailed illustrations of human dissections and sexual organs, included a printed engraving of a stillborn child. Kindly advise your tour guide if you would like to opt out of visiting this space.
